Research On Xu Baoshan’s Novel Criticism

Xu Baoshan’s comments are based on Du Gang’s three novels(Entertainment and Heartbreaking Compilation,Romance of Southern History,and Romance of Northern History).Its comment content mainly includes character comment,military comment and narrative theory comment.In Xu Baoshan’s character comments,he uses Confucian morality as the comment principle,and praises or criticizes the characters in the novel.At the same time,he also continued to enlighten readers through comments to practice his utilitarian principles.In Xu Baoshan’s military evaluation,he evaluated the victory and defeat of the war with the general’s combat ability and the thought of "human harmony".At the same time,he also used the thought of "destiny" to comment on the heroic wonders and the rise and fall of the dynasty.In Xu Baoshan’s narrative theory,there are not only the description of the truth and aesthetics of novels,but also the description of novel techniques.Throughout Xu Baoshan’s novel commentaries,both his thoughts and contents are continuing the development direction of the previous generation of critics.On the ideological level,he inherited the enlightenment ideas of novelists and critics,as well as the traditional "destiny" thought.The two intertwined and pulled each other in their comments.At the level of comment content,he inherited many narrative techniques of previous critics and tried to make breakthroughs in military comment.In general,Xu Baoshan’s comments are the unity of positive and negative,and also the intersection of old and new.
