| The trans-cultural exchange of artworks poses a fundamental issue concerning the cultural identity of artworks. In the era of complicated and volatile globalization, artworks from diverse cultures are exposed to more viewers unfamiliar with their original contexts, through artwork exhibitions, conversations between artists and scholars, and other artistic activities that are becoming increasingly relative. However, this also raises the problem of the identity crisis of artworks across cultures. This paper will explore the concept of the cultural identity of artworks, and the phenomenon of trans-cultural identity, and analyze the reasons for the trans-cultural identity crisis in contemporary art practices. Then we will introduce Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, especially his theory of the fusion of horizons as a theoretical framework for our analysis. The fusion of horizons is a process of equal dialogue and mutual understanding between different cultural perspectives. The fusion of horizons is not seeking a concurrent understanding of contemporary art,nor is it a cross-cultural identity to achieve dialectical identity, but rather an identity based on acknowledging the beauty of one culture among its own members, the beauty of different cultures, the coexistence of diverse beauty, and mutual harmony of diverse beauty. In this way,the globalization of art exchange activities can enrich the development of art itself and generate continuously new meanings. |
