A Report On E-C Translation Of Sci-Tech Texts From The Perspective Of The Translation Shift Theory

With advance of era and rapid development of science and technology,sci-tech translation has become increasingly significant.Quality sci-tech translation can not only spread science and technology information,but also promote scientific and cultural exchanges.This paper is a practice report on translation of sci-tech articles under the guidance of Translation Shift Theory.The selected materials are from the projects translated by the author of this report at the website ofjeemaa.com.Translation Shift Theory emphasizes the necessity of "Shift" in translation,and "Shift" can be divided into "level shift" and "category shift."Category shift has been mostly applied in this translation practice.According to the differences between Chinese and English and the characteristics of sci-tech translation,the author has summarized the most used category shifts in scientific and technological translation:shift between passive voice and active voice,shift between personal subject and impersonal subject,shift of postpositive attributive,shift of nouns and shift of prepositions.This report is divided into five parts.The first chapter introduces the research background,objectives and applied methods,and the overall structure of the report.The second chapter states the introduction to the task and the features of sci-tech translation.The third chapter introduces the theoretical framework of this translation practice,including the origin and development of the Translation Shift Theory and Catford’s Theory of Translation Shift.The fourth chapter is the core of this report,and it focuses on the application of category shift in this translation practice.Through case analysis,it illustrates the significance of Translation Shift Theory in E-C sci-tech translation from three levels of structure shift,class shift and unit shift,which belong to category shift.The fifth chapter summarizes the whole report.
