Harmonic Study Of Frank Bridge's Orchestral Music "Vision

Frank Bridge(1879 ～ 1941)was a famous British composer,violist,conductor and educator.Under the background of British conservatism in the 20 th century,his advanced creative techniques and ideas provided a brand new mode for the development of British music at that time,which followed the trend of the development of The Times and was forward-looking and prescient.His late works are considered as the pioneer of British modernist music in the 20 th century.The orchestral Illusion,composed in 1931,is one of the finest works of Bridge’s late period.This paper takes "Illusion",one of the most famous works of Bridge in his late period,as the research object,and explores the style and characteristics of Bridge’s late music creation with harmonic techniques as the starting point.This paper mainly carries out the research and analysis of this subject through the layout and application of the tonality of the works,the application and treatment of the pitch organization of harmonic materials,the characteristics of harmonic development and other aspects.Firstly,by searching literature and elaborating Bridge’s life and creation process from the perspective of musicology,we can have an overall grasp and understanding of the research object,so as to summarize the reasons for the formation of the overall musical characteristics of this orchestral works.Secondly,from the point of tonality,it analyzes the diversified characteristics of its tonality application.Thirdly,through different viewing angles of horizontal and vertical pitch organization of modern harmonic materials,various modern creative techniques used in his works are extracted,so as to conclude the artistic characteristics of Bridge’s work and the integrated characteristics of harmonic techniques.Through analysis and research,it is found that Bridge’s creation of "Illusion" is out of the control of the traditional major and minor key system,and the whole music reflects the characteristics of compound.The modality system consists of manual modality,church modality and traditional modality.The tonality arrangement is mainly composed of new tonality and multiple tonality.The chord material is novel and unique,weakening the function of traditional third chord,using modern music materials such as augmented third chord,augmented fourth chord and compound chord to integrate the music pitch organization system,and using continuous harmony to carry out characteristics.The creative use of modern music language and composing techniques provided more new development ideas for the development of new music in Britain at that time,and also expected to provide many new creation modes and valuable experience for Chinese music creation to achieve greater achievements in the world.
