As young women pursue their ideal looks and the medical aesthetic industry develops, more and more young Chinese women are undergoing cosmetic surgery. The excessive expectation of achieving ideal beauty through cosmetic surgery is an unhealthy perception, and cosmetic surgery can have a series of negative consequences. Therefore,it is crucial to explore the factors that influence early adult women’s cosmetic surgery consideration. The increasing popularity of selfies and selfie editing behaviors among young women makes it seem that they see their ideal appearance after cosmetic surgery, which may further motivate them to undergo cosmetic surgery. This study therefore aims to investigate the effect of selfie editing behavior on cosmetic surgery consideration among early adult women(18-25 years old)in order to reveal the mechanisms underlying the effect of selfie editing behavior on cosmetic surgery consideration. In Study 1,the Selfie Editing Behavior Scale was developed to measure the frequency of selfie editing behavior in early adult women, and its reliability and validity were tested to be good.In Study 2,a self-administered Selfie Editing Behavior Scale, the Body Monitoring Subscale of the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale, the Appearance Dissatisfaction Subscale of the Negative Body Self Scale, and the Cosmetic Surgery Consideration Subscale of the Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery Scale were used as research instruments to investigate 865 early adult women and reveal the underlying mechanisms of the influence of selfie editing behavior on cosmetic surgery consideration. The Selfie Editing Behavior Scale developed in this study provides a tool for measuring selfie editing behavior among early adult women in China and provides a domestic reference for future development of related scales. At the same time, this study explored the effects of early adult female selfie editing behavior on cosmetic surgery consideration, and revealed the mechanisms by which selfie editing behavior affects female cosmetic surgery consideration, which also provides a new perspective for reducing negative consequences associated with individual body imagery and for future research on related interventions. The study findings were as follows:(1)The self-administered Selfie Editing Behavior Scale is a unidimensional scale consisting of five items, which was tested for good reliability and validity and can be used as a tool to measure individual selfie editing behavior.(2)The selfie editing behaviors of early adult women differed significantly in terms of home location and whether they were in a relationship,as shown by: the frequency of selfie editing behaviors of early adult women in urban areas was significantly higher than those in rural areas, and the frequency of selfie editing behaviors of early adult women in a relationship was significantly higher than those of single early adult women;the appearance dissatisfaction of early adult women differed significantly in terms of whether they were in a relationship,as shown by: single early adult women’s appearance dissatisfaction was significantly higher than that of women in a relationship. There are significant differences in the selfie editing behavior and appearance dissatisfaction of early adulthood women in terms of their current status,as follows: female graduate students have significantly higher frequency of selfie editing behavior than female college students and female social workers;female college students and female graduate students have significantly higher degree of appearance dissatisfaction than female social workers.(3)There is a significant pairwise correlation between selfie editing behavior, selfobjectification, appearance dissatisfaction and cosmetic surgery consideration in early adult women, specifically showing that there is a significant positive correlation between every pairwise relationship.(4)The selfie editing behavior of early adult women can positively predict their cosmetic surgery consideration, and self-objectification and appearance dissatisfaction not only play a separate mediating role in selfie editing and cosmetic surgery consideration, but also play a chain mediating role.
