Jar is a common pottery and porcelain ware of unearthed relics in ruins and tombs of each period in history,it exists across the whole China’s history with remains to research.As the most basic type of ware,Jar and its shape came into evolution by affecting of these factors as social environment,craft and culture,ideological belief.With the social development,it began to produce correlated derivations.This paper takes the ceramic jar of the Sui and Tang Dynasties as the object of the study,making a comprehensive study on the jar in this period,clearing up the jar and its derivation’s general situation of development during the Sui and Tang Dynasties,analyzing the ceramic ware’s developing history of materials and technology in the Sui and Tang Dynasties and the preceding dynasties.This paper expounds the law and direction of the shape evolution of ceramic jars in Sui and Tang dynasties,and makes a preliminary study on the origin of some related ware types which evolved from jars.It not only inherited the types from Wei and Jin periods but also owned its unique style of the times,and other factors of new process and foreign culture.In this paper,a large number of examples are summarized and sorted out by adopting the methods commonly used in the study of the evolution of ancient artifacts,such as chronological sequence method,arrangement and comparison method,observation and analysis method.The evolution and derivative types of jars in the Sui and Tang Dynasties are summarized,and the specific modeling characteristics of these representative types are analyzed and described.Through the research and discussion in this paper,it is concluded that the evolution law of the pot class in Sui and Tang Dynasties is as follows: from Wei and Jin Dynasties,from multiple types to regular,from low to thin.The technological changes were as follows: from celadon glaze jars since Wei and Jin Dynasties,they became "blue in the south and white in the north",and all kinds of color glaze jars and three-color jars appeared at the same time.The derivative types of jars,including the derivative types of jars used for religious burial,led to the derivative development of the two kinds of jars and jars used for table surface in the Sui and Tang dynasties,which were "jars and bottles" and "jars and pots".This paper analyzes the influence of geographical environment,material technology and cultural tradition on this process.The morphological changes of ceramic jars in this period and their derivations are discussed. |
