A Report On E-C Translation Of Paper Swordsmen-Jin Yong And The Modern Chinese Martial Arts Novel(Expert)

Martial arts novels written by Jin Yong(Louis Cha)have been widely welcomed by Chinese people at home and abroad since their birth in the 20 th century.The Flying Fox on Snowy Mountain,the first of Jin Yong’s works to be translated into English in 1993,attracted many overseas sinologists to study his works.Among them,Paper Swordsmen—Jin Yong and the Modern Chinese Martial Arts Novel,a research monograph completed by American sinologist John Christopher Hamm(Han Yisong)on the basis of his doctoral dissertation,is relatively novel.This book,as a typical literary criticism text,provides a detailed organization,overview and analysis of the historical process of the classicization of Jin Yong’s novels.This report is written based on the English-Chinese translation practice of chapter 4 of the book.Chapter 4 is characterized by numerous conceptual metaphorical phenomena and is full of rich and specialized information about literature,especially martial arts novels,which becomes the main difficulty of this translation practice.Therefore,based on the conceptual metaphor proposed by Lakoff and Johnson,this report summarizes the ontological metaphor,orientational metaphor and structural metaphor in the forth chapter.In view of the translation difficulties of metaphor,the translator puts forward three translation strategies: retaining metaphor,removing metaphor and converting metaphor.Through this translation practice,the translator realized that although Paper Swordsmen has a certain degree of textual seriousness,it is still necessary to take language adaptations into account in the process of language conversion.The translator hopes to use her own translation problems and solutions to provide reference and help for future translations of this kind of text.
