Context is the environment that verbal communication depends on.Context affects learners’ understanding and expression of language.Oral class and teaching materials are important sources for learners to learn oral knowledge.Therefore,the context setting in the class and teaching materials is a decisive factor in cultivating learners’ oral communication ability.Among them,the context setting of spoken textbooks is particularly important.At present,the academic circles have made abundant achievements in the research on the context of teaching materials,but most of them are the horizontal comparison of teaching materials at the same level,while the vertical research on the same set of teaching materials is less.A longitudinal study of a set of textbooks can find problems in progressive cohesion and overall arrangement of textbooks.On the basis of combing the context theory,this paper selects topics,characters and scenes from many contextual factors as the research object of textbook context.The study found that in terms of topic type setting,from preparatory to Volume 6,functional topics gradually decreased,declarative topics accounted for a large proportion,and expression topics gradually increased.In terms of topic content selection,the topics selected are very abundant.The primary stage is mainly about basic social topics,and the middle and advanced stage is mainly about learning,work and professional fields.The characters are abundant and gradually appear as workers in various fields.The scene setting in the basic stage meets the communication needs of beginners,but the advanced stage tends to be single.On the whole the cross level setting of context also shows obvious changes in difficulty,the scope of context is expanding and the depth is deepening,which is consistent with the change of learners’ communication level.But there are also some problems,such as:there are some topics are divorced from learners’ life;The characters who undertake the main communication tasks in the text lack the necessary background information;In the advanced stage,the text is mainly interview,and the setting of the scene is very monotonous.These problems lead to the incomplete context,which can not be used as a reproducible communication situation and affect the transfer and application of communication.Finally,this paper puts forward several suggestions to improve the context settings of this set of spoken English textbooks,such as choosing topics closely related to learners;Build a three-dimensional character model to enrich the connotation of characters in textbooks;Enrich the dialogue scenes and pay attention to the replicability of the scenes. |
