A Report On The Translation Of Estimating The Burden Of Foodborne Diseases(Excerpt)

This report is based on the translation practice of "Estimating the Burden of Foodborne Diseases".The source text is an English public handbook edited by the World Health Organization(WHO),published on their official website on June 7th,2021,and open source for translation.The first four chapters were extracted for this practice.Based on Newmark’s text typology and communicative translation theory,this report focuses on the application of communicative translation in the E-C translation practice of popular science texts,with the translation of 12,960 words.The source text provides detailed guidance for national governments on assessing the burden of foodborne diseases as well as the requirements,enabling factors,challenges and steps during the whole process.It is a popular science text which has both information function and vocative function.To convey accurate information,communicative translation is suitable for this translation practice.During the process of translating,translation techniques such as the amplification,conversion,and division were adopted according to the guidance of communicative translation theory,to make the translation more idiomatic.Meanwhile,to achieve the accuracy of the translation and realize the popularization of science knowledge,the translator consulted several monographs and professionals about terminologies of food science and medicine appearing in the text,and adopted the Chinese terms that are generally recognized in the fields.The purpose of this report is to gain an in-depth understanding of the communicative translation at both lexical and syntactic levels,and to explore the translation of popular science texts.Specifically,by analyzing the text of this translation practice,a direction could be proposed on how to help readers of the translated language accept the content of the text more easily to realize the scientific and promotional significance of the source text.
