Cohesion in English,a masterpiece published by the eminent linguists M.A.K Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan in 1976,marks the establishment of the cohesion theory. The two scholars classify the cohesive devices in English discourses into five types, namely reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. They serve as the explicit indicators in texts, and play a crucial role in English-Chinese translation studies. This thesis is a translation report of the sociological monograph So You Want to Talk About Race authored by Ijeoma Oluo in 2018.Based on the cohesion theory, the report targets at the translation techniques of cohesive devices in the source text via case study and text analysis. The examples selected are in line with the theoretical framework outlined by Halliday and Hasan, and carefully analyzed for the most suitable translation techniques. The report puts forward four possible translation techniques:omission, literal translation, conversion and amplification.Omission can be applied to translation of personal reference, demonstrative reference and additive conjunction;literal translation fits in comparative reference, clausal substitution, additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, causal conjunction, temporal conjunction, reiteration and collocation for the best;conversion can be used for translation of nominal and verbal substitution and causal conjunction, and amplification is highly recommended for translation of ellipsis.
