University web pages are not only a window for colleges or universities to serve teachers and students,but also a medium to publicize their images.The content and form of web pages are of great reference value for building the image of colleges or universities.The web pages of departments or schools of colleges or universities shoulder the dual responsibility to publicize their own image of departments or schools.Meanwhile,it is an important way to establish their school image and enhance word-of-mouth effect in an unconventional way.The co-occurrence of multimodal resources of text,images,audio resource,is the main feature of Internet information transmission.Based on the multimodal resources on the web pages of 23 school of foreign languages(SFL for short)of Hubei provincial universities in February,2021,this study analyzes the common image construction of texts,pictures,colors and relationship between text and picture on the web pages in the interaction of multimodal resources.Based on Systemic Functional Grammar,Visual Grammar and system of image-text relationship.The main research questions include:(1)What are the linguistic features of multimodal resources on the SFL web pages of Hubei provincial universities?(2)What kind of school image do the multimodal resources on the SFL web page of Hubei provincial universities construct?After a systematic analysis of the multimodal resources on web pages of 23 SFLs,the findings are as follows:(1)The text modality on the SFL web pages reflects the objective authenticity of school narrative,which mostly uses material process,first-person pronoun and unmarked theme;picture modality shows that SFLs attach great importance to students’ ideological education and teachers’ professional skills,which mostly involves narrative processes,demanding services and horizontal close-up shooting.The theme color modality of the web pages presents a good teaching atmosphere of the school,and it mostly uses red,blue and green with beautiful meanings.(2)The multimodal resources such as text and pictures on the SFL web pages build a school image with an international and multilingual education.The text modality uses words with international meaning,reflecting the internationalization of the schools’ teaching;the reports on the affairs of teachers and students of different majors reflect the multilingualism of the schools’ teaching.The picture modality reflects the internationalization and multilingualism of the schools through the combination of Chinese and foreign languages.Combining Systemic Functional Grammar and Visual Grammar,this research analyzes various multimodalities on the SFL web pages of provincial universities,which enriches the research category of multimodal resource research.By analyzing the SFL web pages of Hubei provincial universities,this study discusses the significance of their web pages to construct school image which is helpful to improve viewers’ cognitive ability of different modalities on web pages,enhance the reader-friendliness of university web pages.Simultaneously,it can help universities to establish their own school image and enhance word of mouth in an unconventional way.
