The offering of English elective course in senior high school provides students with the opportunity to choose their own interesting subjects and greatly improves their personalized development.However,due to the college entrance examination and enrollment system,students almost have no time and energy to develop their own interests.And there is an inconsistency between students’ diversified interests and single curriculum structure.What is the current situation of the offering of English elective course in standardized high schools? What are the achievements and problems?These questions need to be further investigated.Taking affiliated school of Xi’an International Studies University as research subject,the situation of English elective course’s offering and implementation as research content,this study tries to answer the following three questions:The first question is “What is the current situation of the English elective courses’ offering in affiliated school of Xi’an International Studies University?”The second question is “What are the achievements of the implementation of English elective course in affiliated school of Xi’an International Studies University?”The third question is “What are the difficulties encountered by this school in the implementation of English elective course?”Through the study,it can be found that the offering of English elective course in this school has the following characteristics: the school offers elective courses such as“Basic English”,“Appreciation of English songs” and “Appreciation of English movies”.But the school focuses on students’ basic English literacy;the reason why the school offers English elective courses is to follow the requirements of The English Curriculum Standard for General Senior High Schools(2017 edition and 2020revision).The primary achievements can be split into three aspects: the variation of students’ learning style;the extension and expansion of students’ language knowledge;the multiplicity of elective course’s teaching methods.And the main difficulties fell into six aspects: the insufficiency of funds and hardware facilities;the inadequacy of teaching staff;the lack of effective course selection guidance system;the lack of concrete management system;the lack of valid go-class teaching system and the deficiency of evaluation system.And for the difficulties,the author put forward practical suggestions for schools and teachers.For schools,this study provides the following suggestions: perfecting the management system;establishing an effective course selection guidance system;implementing go-class teaching system;perfecting credit management system and perfecting evaluation system.As for teachers,this study tries to help them to improve professional literacy.
