A Report On The E-C Translation Of Star (Excerpts)

This is a report on an English to Chinese translation,the source text of the which is excerpted from Star,a work of youth literature written by American writer Eliza Witte.The book was set in the universe,with a star named Ankaa(she is called Annie on the earth)in the universe as the main character.Ankaa happened to take a trip to the earth.In the process of contact with the human society,she realized the importance of love,family and friendship.As a novel of youth,it was humorous,easy to understand and of great significance for education.Characterization and plots are the key to the success of a literary work.Therefore,the translator paid more attention to the translation of these two elements in the translation of Star.This report is guided by the Text Typology,which divides texts into three categories: expressive texts,informative texts and vocative texts.Problems faced in the translation were solved by communicative translation and semantic translation.Starting from characterization and plots,this report also solves the problems encountered in the translation process,such as how to choose between communicative translation and semantic translation for different types of texts by using different translation methods,such as amplification,omission and division.This translation report consists of five chapters.The first chapter includes the introduction to the source text,the introduction to this report and the research significance.The second chapter contains the process of translation,including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Chapter three explains the Text Typology.Chapter four gives the case study of the translation of the characterization and plots from the perspectives of communicative translation and semantic translation.Chapter five summarizes the limitations and inspirations in translation practice.Through this translation and case study,the translator drew the following conclusions:The translation of youth literature needs to consider the reading experience of the target readers,so it is important to express in the way that can resonate with the readers on the premise of ensuring the faithfulness.
