The source text of this translation practice report is excerpted from The Son of Good Fortune by American Filipino writer Lysley Tenorio, which was published in2020.The book has 32 chapters in total. The translator selected Chapters 8 to 11 as the translation text. The source text takes the survival of immigrants as the theme. It mainly tells the story of a pair of Filipino mother and son who struggle to make a living and have no fixed place because they are illegal immigrants to the United States. The novel reflects some problems existing in today’s society to a certain extent. The source text The Son of Good Fortune belongs to Filipino American novels. The language is easy to understand, and there are proper nouns and culture-loaded words. In addition, because the original author and the main characters are Filipino Americans,a small amount of Filipino appears in the text to highlight their special identities.Meanwhile, there are many long sentences describing the characters’ psychological activities and dialogues.Under the joint guidance of communicative translation and semantic translation, the translator deeply analyzed the content in combination with the context, accurately grasped the deep meaning of vocabulary, and adopted different translation methods. The translation can accurately convey the content and form of the original text and conform to the expression habits of Chinese. In the report, the translator analyzed and discussed the problems encountered in translation from the lexical, sentence, and discourse levels, including proper nouns, form conversion, and clause processing, and literal translation, additional translation, annotation, conversion, and other translation methods were adopted. This text expounds on the survival of Filipino immigrants in the United States, which can provide a way to study the survival status of Filipino immigrants in the United States; In addition, this translation practice proves to a certain extent that these two translation strategies have guiding significance for the translation of Filipino American novels; Finally, through this translation practice report, the author hopes to promote the spread of the novel, even Filipino American literature in China, and provide help and reference for relevant translators and lovers in the future.
