| In 2018,the Ministry of Education issued “The General High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)”,which clearly put forward the concept of core English literacy.It not only emphasizes the learning of students’ language knowledge,but also emphasizes the ability to use English to solve problems.This requires students to actively participate in English learning activities and demonstrate good learning behavior,cognitive and emotional status.It means a high level of learning engagement.In the learning process of students,the level of engagement is not only affected by the individual factors of the students,but also the social support given by external subjects.In this study,questionnaires and interviews are conducted to investigate the current situation of social support and English learning engagement of students in two high schools in Z County,Xi’an City,Shaanxi Province.Furthermore,this study explores the relationship between social support and high school students’ English learning engagement from three dimensions: teacher support,peer support,and parent support.It draws the following conclusions:(1)The social support of general high school students is at a medium level.From highest to lowest,it is teacher support,parent support and peer support.In terms of content,it is mainly behavioral support and tool support,but emotional support is less.There are no significant differences in gender and grade,but there are significant differences in the place of family residence and the educational level of the parents.(2)The learning engagement of general high school students in English is at a medium level.From highest to lowest,it is emotional investment,cognitive investment and behavioral investment.There are no significant differences in gender and grade,but there are significant differences in the place of family residence and the educational level of the parents.(3)Social support and its subdimensions(teacher support,peer support,and parental support)are positively correlated with senior high school students’ English learning engagement,and they all have a significant predictive effect.Teacher support has the greatest impact on English learning engagement,followed by peer support and parent support.According to the above research conclusions,this study puts forward the following four suggestions.For teachers,they should increase supportive behaviors to stimulate students’ interest in learning English and provide students with abundant learning resources to form correct learning concepts.For peers,students should strengthen cooperation to form a learning community.Furthermore,students should help each other to create a positive English learning atmosphere.For parents,they should care about students’ English learning in order to enhance students’ self-efficacy in learning.Meanwhile,parents should provide extracurricular learning materials to create a good learning environment for students.For schools,they should establish a sound evaluation system to promote the all-round development of students.At the same time,it attaches great importance to home-school cooperation in order to strengthen the effectiveness of learning. |
