| Annie Dillard is an important writer of American ecological literature. Her prose collection Pilgrim at Tinker Creek has aroused great repercussions and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975.Up to now, scholars at home and abroad have analyzed the book from a variety of perspectives, like religious themes,American Transcendentalism, dialectical vision and ecological aesthetics.Although the ecological ethics expounded in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek has been studied by some researchers,it still has not received enough attention. On the basis of previous studies, from the perspective of ecological ethics, this study explores the relationship between man and nature elaborated by Anne Dillard in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, her criticism of anthropocentrism and her advocation on ecological holism.By analyzing the examples in the book, this thesis reveals that Dillard opposes the dominant position of human beings, questions the blind development of human society, emphasizes giving moral care to animals, and shows that culture and nature are complementary. The key to returning to nature is to realize the transformation from ego-consciousness to eco-consciousness.Dillard’s ecological ideal enlightens human beings to fulfill their responsibilities for the environment and other organisms, maintain the balance and stability of the ecosystem, and realize human poetic habitation. |
