Diaspora literature has gradually formed a relatively independent research field. There have been some scholars studying it from different perspectives such as “cultural identity”,“diaspora writing”,“comparative literature” and “diaspora criticism”.However, according to the database of CNKI,the translation research of diaspora literature is relatively scarce. This translation report selects Miss New India, the diasporic novel of American Indian writer Bharati Mukherjee as the source text.Closely tied to coherence between the four steps of the hermeneutic motion,it adopts methods of case study, comparative analysis and content analysis to explore why the author of this report chooses to trust the source text.Furthermore,it analyzes the author’s aggression towards social background and religious terms, incorporation into text form and rhetorical meaning as well as reciprocity for the imbalance of translation by addition and omission through translation cases selected from the prologue and the first chapter of this book. This translation practice proves that the four steps of the hermeneutic motion have run through the whole process of the translation practice of Miss New India and this theory is applicable to the translation practice of diaspora literature and instructive for the translation practice of literary texts. This translation practice and report would help enrich the target readers’ understanding of Indian culture, religion and social customs and provide reference for the translation practice of literary texts.
