Abstract/Summary:
There have been some discussions on the Chang’an model of Buddhist statues, focusing on the formation time, artistic origin, main characteristics and scope of influence of the Chang’an model, but no more consistent views have been formed. This paper is devoted to combing the evolution of the artistic style of Buddhist statues in Chang’an area from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the prosperous Tang Dynasty, discussing the time and causes of its formation,as well as its impact on the social aesthetic tendency. At present, the earliest Buddhist statues found in Chang’an area can be traced back to the late Eastern Han Dynasty, with a more obvious Gandhara style. From the Northern Wei Dynasty, the number of Buddhist statues in Chang’an area gradually increased, with folk statues as the main form. After the Western Wei Dynasty and the Northern Zhou Dynasty, the Buddhist statues in Chang’an developed in a zigzag way.In the late Northern Zhou Dynasty, the style changed greatly, and the Royal and noble statues of the Northern Zhou Dynasty appeared. From the Sui Dynasty to the early Tang Dynasty,Chang’an once again became the capital of the unified dynasty.Various statue craftsmen and various statue art schools gathered in Chang’an,laying a technical foundation for the formation of the "Chang’an model" of Buddhist statues. From the later period of Taizong to the period of Gaozong,Xuanzang,Wang xuance and others brought back a large number of scriptures, statues and Buddhist paintings from India. The combination of Chinese Buddhist statues and foreign statues resulted in the first appearance of Buddhist statues in the prosperous Tang Dynasty in Chang’an area. The "Chang’an model" of Buddhist statues was thus formed, and had a profound impact on the changes of Buddhist statues in other parts of the country and even Japan.
