This translation practice report is based on the analyses and summary of the English-Chinese translation practice of the romance novel My Name is Anton(Chapter Ten to Twelve)published by American best-selling author Catherine Ryan Hyde in 2020.The novel is highly satisfying, intriguing and substantial in strength and solidity, which depicts the touching story of the hero and heroine gaining power in love, redeeming each other, and opening a new life from a third-person perspective. The practice of English-Chinese translation has been completed under the guidance of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory,of which the fourfold translation method is made full use to solve the difficult issues encountered in the translation process, and case study method is adopted in the report. This translation practice report uses Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory to explain the translator’s translation behavior and translation process, and explores the applicability of the theory to the translation of literary texts.Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory subdivides the translation process into four steps: “trust”,“aggression”,“absorption” and “compensation”,and each step is continuous and integrated. This translation practice is premised on the author’s full trust to the translation value of source text and translator’s translation competence.By invading into the shell of the alien language and culture, absorbing the original form appropriately, the author presents the core meaning with proper translation strategies, and further achieves the balance between the original work and its translation by means of compensating.Through the cases studies in the report, the author finds that Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory can help the translator to achieve the requirements of understanding and expressing in the process of literary text translation, and to break the language barriers and cultural confrontation between the source language and the target language so that to improve the quality of translation. It hopes that the combination of theory and practice can help readers deeper understand the ideas and contents of the original work.At the same time,it also hopes to show the translator’s efforts in breaking the language and culture barriers and coordinating the relationship between the original text and the readers.
