| Economic globalization is a double-edged sword, and as globalization enters the3.0 era,it has brought new problems and challenges while promoting the development of human society. These new problems are no longer confined to one country or one region, but have already involved in every country and every nation, affecting everyone’s daily life. Therefore, the new global challenges require the cooperation of all countries,so as to work together to build a community with a shared future for mankind,to build a world of lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness, inclusiveness, cleanliness and beauty. However,in the face of the severe challenges of unilateralism and protectionism, the trend of parochialism is on the rise. The key feature of parochial cooperation behavior is reflected in the events of deglobalization in recent years. Some countries, regions or organizations choose to engage in parochial regional cooperation, excluding others,in order to seek their own short-term benefits, and even at the expense of other groups,or global long-term interests. Therefore, how to reduce parochial cooperation behavior has become one of the important issues in social psychology.Narrative description is a series of narrative related events or experiences recorded in words.People receive and process a large amount of narrative information every day and in the process of reading books, watching movies, and other activities, convert the narrative description into their own imaged experiences, from which they improve their understanding of different individuals and groups and thus reduce their prejudice against other groups.Narrative description is likely to be an low cost and effective intervention because it has been shown to be effective in influencing parochial empathy and parochial altruism, and because it has been shown to be driven by ingroup-love and outgroup-hate.Therefore,this study aimed to explore the mechanisms of the narrative description of parochial cooperation behavior through three series of studies to enrich theoretical and empirical research on parochial cooperation behavior.Study I(N = 37)examines the effects of different types of narrative description on parochial cooperative behavior using a public goods paradigm.Study II(N = 40)examined the mediating role of perceived similarity in narrative description and parochial cooperative behavior, and subdividing parochial cooperative behavior into strong and weak parochial cooperative behavior through an intergroup parochial and universal cooperation game.Study III(N = 80)manipulated intergroup cooperative and competitive relationships to examine the moderating role of intergroup relationships on narrative description and parochial cooperative behavior.Findings revealed that(1)viewpoint-related narrative description reduced parochial cooperative behavior more than event-related narrative information.(2)Perceived similarity fully mediated narrative description and strong parochial cooperation behavior.Perspective-related narrative information elicits higher levels of perceived similarity in individuals, which in turn reduces strong parochial cooperation behavior.(3)Intergroup relations moderate the relationship of narrative description with parochial cooperative behavior and strong parochial cooperative behavior. In cooperative intergroup relation situations, the narrative description had no significant effect on parochial cooperative behavior and strong parochial cooperative behavior, whereas,in competitive intergroup relation situations, the viewpoint-related narrative description had the opposite effect on parochial cooperative behavior and strong parochial cooperative behavior. This study is helpful to understand the impact of narrative description on parochial cooperative behavior in different intergroup relational contexts. |
