Angela Carter is a postmodern writer. With her extraordinary creativity and imagination, she constructs a series of diverse and distinctive space in her short story texts, including castles, mansions, taverns, squares, forests, colonies and so on.In Carter’s short stories, the space is not only the backdrop for the story and the stage for the characters’ activities, but also spatial elements with independent meanings and functions, playing an irreplaceable role in promoting the development of the plot, representing the characters, and metaphorizing the theme of the work. Therefore,it is feasible and innovative to study the overview of the space, the image of the space and the narrative of the space in Carter’s short stories based on the emerging space theory in the postmodern context. The dissertation consists of three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The body is divided into four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the analysis of the relationship between Carter’s short story writing and space theory. This chapter compares the development of the concept of space and popular perception of space in the West, introduces the space theories since the spatial turn, explores the influence of space theories on literary research and literary criticism, and finally explains the feasibility of using spatial-related theories to study Carter’s short stories. The second chapter focuses on the qualities of space in Carter’s short stories.Starting from three aspects, including the physical form of space, the characters’ spatial perception and the personality characteristics of space,it provides a comprehensive overview of the uniqueness of space in Carter’s short stories from the whole to the individual and from the concrete to the abstract. The third chapter is an analysis of the space image in Carter’s short stories.By selecting the two most representative types of space in Carter’s short stories, the forest and domestic space, the role of space as an element with independent significance in driving the plot development, characterisation and metaphor for the theme of the work is analysed. The fourth chapter explores the narrative space in Carter’s short stories, understanding the relationship between space and time, the strategy of space selection and the spatial form of text narrative in Carter’s short stories at the level of literary narrative. The concluding section sums up the full text, illustrating the value and significance of space in Carter’s short story texts for the expression of her individual creative ideas and artistic appeal. |
