Emotion Annotation Method In Collins Learner’s English-chinese Dictionary

Sentiment analysis and opinion mining have become popular study topics in recent years.The outcomes of sentiment analysis and opinion mining,according to the researchers,may be influenced by the quality of the sentiment lexicon that was used.They devoted a significant amount of time and effort to the construction and annotation of a sentiment lexicon,and on this basis,they proposed a number of construction and annotation methods.The annotation of the commendatory and derogatory meanings and emotion classification of sentimental words is the most widely utilized method among these.However,because this annotation method is based on the emotion system,and because a unified emotion system has not yet been established at home and abroad,it is difficult to apply to customers comments corpora.As a result,it is vital to explore other annotation methods.In light of this,this thesis selects sentimental words from Collins Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary in order to answer the following questions:(1)How can sentimental words be distinguished from pragmatic words in Collins Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary?(2)What are the commonly used annotation methods in sentiment lexicons?(3)How to re-annotate sentimental words in Collins Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary based on polarity and modality? Based on these research questions,the research methods of qualitative analysis and qualitative analysis are used in this paper to summarize the annotation methods used in sentiment lexicons at home and abroad,compare their advantages and disadvantages,and annotate the sentimental words in Collins Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary using the theory of polarity and modality in Systemic Functional Linguistics.It is discovered that the existing annotation system in Collins Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary is not accurate enough to suit the needs of sentiment analysis,and that a new method for annotation has to be used instead.However,because the majority of the annotation methods typically employed in sentiment lexicons both at home and abroad are based on the emotion system,it is difficult to achieve a significant breakthrough in this area.Identifying the new method requires starting with a fresh perspective on the existing theory.There are two sections to the method utilized in this study,which is based on polarity and modality theory.The first is polarity annotation,and the second is modality annotation.When these words are annotated,it is discovered that the sentimental words of modality in the dictionary accounts for the vast majority of them,and that the other categories account for just a small number of them.If compared with other generally used methods,it is observed that this method is not only more reasonable in categorization,but it is also more acceptable for consumer corpus analysis.The sentimental words employed in this study,however,are restricted to Collins Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary and do not cover all of the English sentimental words due to a lack of available research time.Additionally,the collecting and annotation processes are carried out manually,which may result in some minor inaccuracies.But it is worth mentioning that,these inaccuracies will only have little impact on the annotation of the lexicon and its future application.With the increasing demand for sentiment lexicons,figuring out how to annotate sentimental words is a topic that should be further explored in the near future.In this study,the author presented a first attempt at a polarity and modality-based annotation system.There is still much room for improvement in this area.Further research on how to annotate the modality part more precisely,as well as how to apply them to the customer comment corpus,is required.
