This paper takes the Swiss International Typographic Style(Internationalist Style)that originated in the 1950 s,and investigates it from the perspective of technological change. In order to provide useful reference and inspiration for the layout design transformation under the influence of technological change, the evolution law of technological change is summarized and the successful experience of technological change is learned under the influence of technological change in different stages,This paper is mainly carried out from the following three aspects.First of all, this paper analyzes the early appearance of internationalism style before it was impacted by technological change(the period of letterpress printing),and expounds that the core issue of this period is to construct basic theoretical, principles and methods,as the development of the international style foundation, provides an important reference for the following change.Secondly,it discusses the new thinking of internationalism in aesthetic concept design practice and theoretical research under the influence of two technological changes. After the first technological change focused on the 1950 s,the design industry ushered in the change from letterpress printing technology to phototypesetting technology. However, the conceptual aesthetic standards and design norms of the early internationalism style could not fully adapt to the new environment.Wolfgang Weingart and Hans-Rudolf Lutz were the key figures to break the deadlock.By taking advantage of new technologies and designing experiments, they broke the shackles of traditional paradigms and made the internationalist style, which had been confined to a single dogmatic style towards a diversified development direction. The second technological change is from phototypesetting technology to computer technology after the 1980 s,although computers had expanded the scope of choreography on many levels, there were problems of visual confusion and lack of professionalism behind it.Therefore,“breaking” was no longer the development direction of internationalism style, but more inclined to review the merits and demerits in a posture of looking back at history and reflecting on technology.Among them, the new generation of designers Bruno Monguzzi and Georg Staehelin, they continued the vitality of the internationalist style through abstract inheritance. Finally, through sorting out the two important historical nodes,we can summarize the evolution law of internationalism style in the two periods of technological change, that is,in the transition between “breaking” and “returning”,it presents a spiraling trend of development. It is worthwhile to learn from this experience to help designers think about the relationship between technology and design, and to modify their approach and attitude when dealing with technology. This is a source of inspiration and guidance for current, and even future,Typography theory and design practice.
