Research On Zao Wou-Ki Painting Training Class

In May 1985,Zao Wou-Ki,the French Chinese painter,was invited to Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts to hold a one-month painting class.The training class drew widespread concern from researchers of Chinese contemporary art history and is of great significance to the development of Chinese contemporary art education.There are many articles record substances of this class,while few of them referred to the whole process of it.Through collecting relevant archival materials,this paper analyzes and summarizes the workshop’s origin,teaching characteristics and the relationship with the ’85 New Wave,so as to truly present the appearance of Zao Wou-Ki’s painting class.This essay is originated during doing research on Painting Classes by Zhao Wou-Ki,by organizing original archives and a compilation of relevant resources,with painstaking examination developed gradually from point to surface,along with recreating historical context,we can make a clear conclusion that holding a class is nothing by accident,it requires joint efforts to move things forward.This essay is based on notes documented from training members along with a compilation of relevant resources,translating the teaching techniques from Zhao Wou-Ki to following 3 areas:the combination of practical demonstration and paining theory,the combination of regulating and allowing personal growth,the combination of practicing skills and expanding the vision,he made a far-reaching impact on individual art development with his unique teaching methods.The analysis is based on painting class internal teaching techniques and exploring the relationship with “New Artistic Trend 85”,demonstrating how it shapes Chinese Modern arts creation and teaching,and leave an impact on both areas.Painting classes hold by Zhao Wou-Ki not only inspired his students to have new ideas on art creation and concepts,but also bring in direct experiences that contributed to revolution of Chinese Modern arts education.
