English is one of the basic subjects in the compulsory education curriculum in junior high schools in China.In the English teaching process,a most important part is vocabulary teaching.However,due to the lack of conscious use of effective English vocabulary teaching methods,many students can only memorize English vocabulary by rote learning.Students lack the word-decoding ability and word-spelling ability,which further leads to students’ loss of confidence in English learning.As a result,these students may become "poor English learners".This is not good for them to learn English.Phonics is an English vocabulary teaching method.Teachers can teach students vocabulary the typical feature of phonics—letter-sound correspondence rules.Learning phonics helps students master word-decoding and wordspelling skills so that students can pronounce words when they read them,and write words when they hear the words’ pronunciations.That is “read according to the spelling,write according to the sound”.Moreover,it can improve students’ interest and confidence in the English learning process.This research explores the role of phonics in the English learning of poor learners in Grade 7 of junior high schools in China.In this research,this author analyzes whether "poor English learners" in Grade 7 can “read according to the spelling,write according to the sound”when learning phonics,whether learning phonics can improve "poor English learners" worddecoding ability and word-spelling ability in Grade 7 and whether learning phonics can improve the interest of “poor English learners” in the English learning.This research adopts a combination of quantitative research and qualitative research,including testing,interview,comparative teaching experiments,literature method and questionnaires.The results of the test are analyzed by SPSS 26.0 the results of questionnaires,the conclusions of the interview and the observations in the classroom,the conclusions are reached as follows.Learning phonics can improve English “poor English learners” word-decoding ability and word-spelling ability of Grade 7;learning phonics can improve the interest of “poor English learners” of Grade 7 in the English learning process.Therefore,in the teaching process of Grade 7 students,this author also makes some teaching suggestions.Teachers can use positive transfer of Chinese Pinyin to teach phonics and provide convenience for English vocabulary teaching.
