A Report On C-E Translation Practice Of Sparks Fly(Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Tytler’s Three Principles Of Translation

Sparks Fly(2020)is a novel written by Chi Zijian,a renowned contemporary female writer in China.It records the ordinary life of urban dwellers represented by Liu Jianguo.This novel is set in the city of Harbin that is not only the place where the story takes place,but also a narrative space full of cultural and historical uniqueness,which embarks on a new path for writing about the city in contemporary Chinese literature.Given the description of the city’s culture and customs and a variety of narrative techniques,it contains a large number of culture-loaded terms,rhetorical devices and long sentences,with deep cultural connotations.The translation of this novel is of great significance to the “going out” of excellent Chinese literary works and the people-to-people exchanges between China and foreign countries.The “Three Principles of Translation” proposed by the famous translator Alexander Fraser Tytler have been enshrined as guidelines by many people,that is,a translation should give a complete transcript of the ideas of the original work;the style and manner of writing should be the same character with that of the original;the translation should have all the ease of original composition.These three principles are listed in descending order of importance and cannot be reversed at will.As for literary translation,it is difficult to achieve cohesion and reproduce the style and cultural connotations of the original on the premise of remaining faithful to the original.Tytler’s three principles of translation provide good theoretical guidance for this translation practice.Under the guidance of Tytler’s three principles of translation,this report deals with the selected text(the first two chapters)of Sparks Fly from lexical,syntactic and discourse levels and flexibly adopts various translation strategies such as annotation,paraphrasing,amplification and substitution,in order to achieve fidelity to the original,reproduce its style and improve readability.In the conclusion,the report summarizes the main findings and limitations of the translation practice,and give relevant suggestions on ways to deal with texts in literary translation.
