It is significant that understand English language(EL)learners’ individual differences.From the perspective of middle school students,research on how to cultivate students attracts many researchers,doing this kind of research in the context of the pandemic in the world and the "Double reduction policy" in China is the main stakeholders of this dissertation.Starting from individual differences,understanding students’ real motivation for English language learning(ELL)can effectively promote the development and reform of English language teaching(ELT)in middle schools.This thesis,informed by self-concept,tracked 100 grade nine students at Bishan Secondary School(BSS)in Chongqing,to investigate factors influencing student’s learning motivation and response towards the influence.Refer to students’ journals on their daily ELL and after-class interviews,two key questions were asked-(1)What motivated or demotivated middle school students in ELL;(2)How did the motivators or demotivators influence middle school students’ ELL performance?By using open coding and axial coding methods of the grounded theory on the basis of students’ journals and interviews with them.From the perspective of self-concept,this thesis draws the following research results:(1)Students’ ideal selves,desired selves and should selves play positive roles in middle school students’ ELL motivation.In the mean time,students’ fearful selves and actual selves play negative role;(2)Students’ self-concept is a dynamic psychological process.The significance of this study lies in the understanding of ELL from the perspective of self-concept through the cooperation of students.It provides suggestions for the development of ELT and ELL.In order to improve the learning efficiency of EL learners,it is necessary to correctly deal with their fearful selves and actual selves and reduce the negative impact on their ELL motivation.At the same time,make good use of students’ ideal selves,desired selves and should selves,and establish students’ correct outlook on life and values.
