| This report is based on the translation of Chapter V of Development of Achievement Motivation, which discusses the correlation between motivations and achievements and the various factors(ethnic, gender, etc.)behind the different levels of students’ achievement motivations. As a middle school teacher, the translator has, like many other colleagues,first-hand experience of what a significant role“achievement motivation” plays in students’ performance at school. That’s why the source text was chosen in the first place.Development of Achievement Motivation,of educational psychology text, does not easily yield to literal translation. Therefore, various explicitation strategies were employed in translation.Kinga Klaudy divides explicitation into four categories, namely, obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation, pragmatic explicitaion and translation-inherent explicitation. And the first three categories were resorted to as guidance regularly in the translation and they therefore together frame the case analysis of the report in which it will be shown how assorted methods were used to achieve explicitation.Lexical specification and grammatical addition, among others, were employed to achieve obligatory explicitation.Optional explicitation could be achieved via restructuring sentences, punctuation conversion, filling elliptical constructions and conversion, etc.Pragmatic explicitation could be realized through providing additional information. The chapter of case analysis is preceded by three chapters, devoted to a project description,an account of the translation process, and an introduction to the explicitation theory, respectively. In the last chapter of this report, the gains and the limitations are summarily presented. |
