As one of the “five focuses” in the Belt and Road Initiative, the people-to-people bond has achieved significant results on the basis of long-term Chinese-foreign communication,in which interactions between ethnic groups across the world have built a bridge for understanding, mutual trust and cooperation. The report, based on the author’s experience in the Forum on China-ASEAN Modern Inheritance and Development of Traditional Ethnic Culture 2020 and from the perspective of the Interpretive Theory, analyzes the challenges he confronted during interpreting. The author encountered three phases of challenges in the interpreting:First, the phonetic challenges of culture-specific terms spoken in ethnic languages of India and phonetic variety in Indian English impeded the interpreter’s comprehension of the original information.Second, the influence of fast speech demonstrated the interpreter’s inadequacy of de-verbalization.Third,in the phase of re-expression,insufficient explanation for Chinese culture-specific terms affected the dissemination of Chinese ethnic culture to the foreign recipients. Moreover, the interpreter’s disfluency occurred because of a Chinese speech delivered by a Thai scholar whose expression habits were not in accordance with Chinese. The author finds that the adoption of transliteration and generalizing translation can realize quick translation output to alleviate the interpreter’s stress in listening comprehension caused by cultural-specific terms spoken in ethnic languages of India.Specifically prepared pre-interpreting accent listening exercises and making use of context and supplement translation during interpreting can cope with the comprehension challenge of phonetic variety in Indian English.Omission adopted in fast speech interpreting proves to be efficient to get rid of the linguistic forms of the original. In the last phase of re-expression,transliteration with explanation is helpful to promote the transmission of Chinese ethnic culture.Through skilful use of cohesion method such as conversion, the interpreter’s output can be effectively improved when interpreting the Chinese speech by the Thai speaker. The report is aimed to provide reference to tackling challenges in the simultaneous interpreting of ethnic culture.
