Video games emerged in American laboratories in the 1950 s,experienced tremendous growth in a short period of time,and are now one of the most common forms of entertainment in people’s daily lives.Film art is a technological product of the industrial age and is one of the art forms most closely connected with human life.With the continuous progress of digital technology,video games have developed themselves while also producing the phenomenon of integration with film art.The purpose of this study is to clarify the development and key points of the integration of video games with cinema from the perspective of narratology.Using literature research,interdisciplinary research,and case study methods,this paper starts from the distinction between story and discourse to the current fusion of the two,focuses on the process of the cinematization of video game narratives,examines the characteristics and performance of the cinematization of video game narratives,and finally puts forward the limitations of the cinematization of video game narratives from a critical standpoint.This paper first examines the cinematization of video game storytelling.In the historical dimension,the time trail of this dimension of cinematization from its emergence to its basic formation is sorted out.In the doctrinal dimension,the artistic characteristics of video games that tend to be cinematic at the storytelling level are argued from three aspects,namely,Hollywood-style plot structure,heroic characters and star roles,and stimulating story emotions.Secondly,the cinematization of video games at the level of discourse is examined.In the historical dimension,the time clues of the cinematization of video game narrative discourse are sorted out.In the doctrinal dimension,the filmic narrative discourse characteristics of video games are examined from three levels: camera,editing and sound.Finally,the deep integration of video games and movies in the present time is examined,and the emergence of interactive cinematic games is an important manifestation of this level of cinematization.In the historical dimension,the various forms and developments of interactive cinematic video games are sorted out.In the doctrinal dimension,through the examination of textual and perceptual levels,it is argued that the integration of interactive narrative of video games and cinema in the underlying mechanism is possible,and a new logic of interactive narrative perception with a hybrid,external/internal interactivity symbiosis is formed.This new logic of perception further influences people’s cognitive experience of video games ontology,thus blurring the boundary between video games and movies and enabling the deep integration of the two.The cinematization of video game narratives is an important part of the current trend of media convergence.To systematically examine this vein in both historical and theoretical dimensions is not only to trace the origin,ponder the present and look into the future,but also to see the microcosm and provide us with ideological resources to understand the complicated and complex media changes.
