Qiming Publishing House is a small and medium-sized book company established in the prosperous period of the book industry in the Republic of China. In 1936,Shen Zhiming, son of the publisher Shen Zhifang, founded Qiming Publishing House at no.400 Fuzhou Road,Shanghai, and acted as the host.Over the next two years,Qiming Publishing House Established itself as a publisher of popular literature.Shen Zhiming launched a series of "World Literary Masterpieces" in the heat of literary translation publishing.Through the selection of translation objects, the compilation principle of striving for popularization, and the printing and distribution requirements of universal orientation, the readers have formed the basic impression that the bookstore is keen on publishing popular literary translation works. At the same time,in response to the requirements of the times of recording and reviewing the New Culture Movement, the "Chinese New Literature Series" was published and with its high-quality selection, economic binding, and low price,it has become a cheap substitute for "Chinese New Literature".After the war of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out in 1938,Qiming Publishing House, which remained in Shanghai, adjusted its publishing business activities in time according to the changing situation under the difficult publishing business environment during the war,During the war period,it expanded its publishing activities through multiple channels and used self-study reading materials "English Self-study Series",ancient books "Four Books of Chinese Translation and Interpretation",popular literature translation "Juvenile Literature Masterpieces",expand distribution channels through the establishment of branch offices and the addition of telephone book purchase services. In addition,in order to adapt to the changing situation of the war and the relocation of the publishing center,Qiming Publishing House also carried out cooperation with other book companies to commission printing books. In 1949,its host,Shen Zhiming, moved the Publishing House from Shanghai to Taiwan out of a desire for liberal literators and concerns about Taiwan’s publishing environment. After its removal,Qiming Publishing House showed a distinctive feature of publishing and transplantation in China’s mainland. It not only reprinted old works such as translated works of world literary classics published by itself in Shanghai period, but also compiled old works published by other book companies in the form of series, including Youth Encyclopedia Series and New Literature and Art Series. In addition. In Taiwan,Qiming Publishing House has also published a small number of new literary works represented by Qi Qing Lou Miscellany and Lubai Collection. In terms of momentum,Qiming Publishing House is like the world book store of the1920 s,quite like a revival. In 1959,Qiming Publishing House suffered from "Ying Wen Chan Case" due to the publication of "The Long March 25,000 Li" and "The History of Chinese Literature",which directly led to the decline of Qiming Publishing House, the head of the company went to the United States one after another, the Publishing House published fewer books, and finally disappeared in the publishing industry.Taking Qiming Publishing House as a case to study the publishing industry in modern and contemporary China, not only can we see the evolution of the traditional book industry family under the modern publishing industry, but also the development path choice of the Republic of China publishing house, which moved to Taiwan around 1949.The Thirty-year history of Qiming Publishing House is a vivid portrayal of the survival and development of China’s private publishing institutions in the Republic of China. It’s fate reflects the interaction between social reality and publishing institutions.
