The source text is excerpted from Understanding Ageing for Nurses and Therapists. It is an academic book that explores ageing, nursing management and care for older adults.According to statistics, the number of elderly people aged 65 and above in China is about 167 million, while data from the National Health Commission shows that there are only more than 500,000 elderly caregivers in China, and there are problems such as low education and skills of caregivers. Therefore, the author selects this book as the source text to provide some reference to nursing staff in China so as to strengthen their professional knowledge, enhance their understanding of normal ageing and eliminate prejudice against the elders.Andrew Chesterman classifies translation norms into expectancy norms and professional norms with the latter being further divided into accountability norm, communication norm and relation norm and proposes corresponding strategies such as syntactic/grammatical strategies, semantic strategies and pragmatic strategies.Under the guidance of translation norm theory, most problems are solved with the application of different translation strategies. In this report, the translator illustrates the applicability of Chesterman’s theory to the translation of nursing texts. At the grammatical level, translation strategies such as transposition, unit shift, sentence structure change and cohesion change are used to solve the problems caused by language differences. At the semantic level, the translator adopts the strategy of distribution change to make the information transmission clearer and the strategy of abstraction change to solve problems caused by different thinking pattern so as to make translation conform to expression habits of target readers. At the pragmatic level, the translator uses the strategies of explicitness change, coherence change and visibility change to overcome obstacles of information transmission through annotation. This paper is expected to provide reference for other translators working on similar texts and to provide practical guidance for nursing staff in China, enabling them to provide high-quality care for older adults in different care settings. |
