Abstract/Summary:
In the late Qing Dynasty and the Period of the Republic of China,with the protection derived from treaties and colonial power,a great number of the westerners poured into the minority areas of South-West China for investigation or education activities.The reporter named Edwin J.Dingle and some missionaries,as an example,Samuel Pollard,they were among the best.Dingle captured the new things of the object with an ordinary and traveling way of curiosity,and the missionaries stayed in an area for a long time,observing the other in an embedded way.The westerners wrote the works based on their own experience,and these writings included Across China on Foot: Life in the Interior and Reform Movement(1911),Among the Tribes in South-West China(1911),The Story of the Miao(1919)and Stone-Gateway and the Flowery Miao(1937),these English writings recorded and explained the image of Hua Miao in the special awkward time context that meant the Chinese who was looked down on,investigated,written by the westerners and “had to come on stage with all kinds of people who were so-called ‘tu ren’ ”.Generally speaking,the image of Hua Miao that the westerners felt,expressed and constructed didn’t reflect the real image,but the westerners created the texts by cutting and processing repeatedly based on the objective existence,and assisted with the complete stereotypes in the cultural world of the west and the historical signs of collective imagination,the individual visual angle,professional identities,cultural standpoints and values of the writers.Therefore,this study,after sorting out and reading the relevant original English writings,analyzes the image of Hua Miao constructed in these works on the basis of Imagology,assisted by the relevant principles and methods of Narratology.This paper is divided into three parts: introduction,main text and conclusion.The introduction mainly introduces the reasons for selecting the topic,sorts out the research status quo and introduces the research methods and the innovative value at home and abroad.The main text includes four chapters.The first chapter summarizes the history of the evolution of Hua Miao,taking the late Qing Dynasty and the Period of the Republic of China as the historical background,and introduces the westerners who visited and communicated with Hua Miao,then introduces the works involved Hua Miao which written by the westerners.The second chapter summarizes and unscramble the content of Hua Miao in the works of Pollard,William Huspeth,Samuel Clarke and Dingle and so on to outline the general framework of the culture and the image of Hua Miao combining with the main level of the cultural context.The third chapter summarizes the image of Hua Miao relying on the cultural image of Hua Miao which mentioned in the above chapter to refine and sublime the general picture of the image of Hua Miao,going to investigate the social and ethnic culture field of the historical context and cultural hinge of the text,analyzes the text from the stereotype,the relationship of the words and the narrative tragedies.In the fourth chapter,the part examines the image and discusses the value of introspection of the image of Hua Miao which was created by some domestic scholars.The conclusion summarizes the content described in this article,sublimates the theoretical value of the construction of the image of Hua Miao to take history as a mirror and build the image of the theoretical value of Hua Miao.All in all,these related English writings which are based on the different cultural background of the special historical and space-time context observation in the late Qing Dynasty and the Period of the Republic of China,on the one hand,the westerners wrote writings due to the needs of the differences of local realities,but there is the unique value that the Chinese ignore especially.These English writings are enough to supply the records in Chinese and ethnography,therefore,the works are with mirroring value of the realistic significance and the value of the study of Imagology.
