One of the important indicators of executive function is response inhibition.According to research, family socioeconomic status can predict individual response inhibition ability, and those from low-income families have worse reaction inhibition ability. This study intends to start from the external environment and internal factors to investigate the mediating role of maternal parenting style and anxiety level on the relationship between family socioeconomic status and adolescent response inhibition ability in order to further explore the internal mechanism of the influence of family socioeconomic status on adolescent response inhibition. The first study included 302 adolescents to investigate the association between family socioeconomic status, maternal parenting style, and adolescents’ ability to regulate their responses. The results of correlation analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation between adolescents’ objective family socioeconomic status, subjective family socioeconomic status, and emotional warmth dimension of mother’s parenting style, and a significant negative correlation with IES,mother’s refusal and denial, and mother’s severe punishment dimension. There was a significant positive correlation between subjective family socioeconomic status and the dimension of maternal emotional warmth, and a significant negative correlation with the dimensions of IES,maternal over-intervention and protection, maternal refusal and denial, and maternal punishment.Further mediation analysis showed that the dimension of maternal emotional warmth played a mediating role between family socioeconomic status and IES indicators. The second study included 240 adolescents to investigate the link between family socioeconomic status, anxiety level, and adolescents’ response inhibition ability. There were significant negative correlations between objective family socioeconomic status, subjective family socioeconomic status and IES,state anxiety and trait anxiety scores in adolescents.Further mediation effect analysis found that there was a mediating effect between adolescents’ state anxiety level and objective family socioeconomic status and response inhibition ability, and state anxiety and trait anxiety levels played a mediating role between subjective family socioeconomic status and adolescent response inhibition ability, respectively.Study 3 enrolled 229 adolescents to investigate the effect of maternal parenting style and anxiety level in mediating the relationship between family socioeconomic status and adolescents’ response inhibition ability.According to the results of the regression analysis, parental over-intervention protective dimension and state anxiety level performed a chain mediating effect between subjective socioeconomic status and adolescents’ response inhibition ability. This study found that the lower the subjective family socioeconomic status, the lower the IES value of the adolescents in the go/no-go task, indicating that their response inhibition ability was better, and the mother’s excessive interference protection and the adolescent’s state anxiety level acted as a chain mediator.effect.Specifically,the lower the subjective family socioeconomic status of the adolescent, the more likely the mother is to adopt an over-intrusive parenting style, which will increase the level of state anxiety and lead to the poorer response inhibition ability of the adolescent. |
