A Report On The E-c Translation Of Strangers (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Hermeneutic Theory In Translation

The materials for this translation are chapters 1^st to 5^th of the novel Strangers,the24^th novel by Anita Bruckner,the winner of the Booker Prize.It is shortlisted for the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and shows difficulties in the life of the elderly in modern society by describing the protagonist’s life.This translation task is guided by George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion theory,which evolved from hermeneutics and has four steps:trust,aggression,incorporation,and compensation.Trust is the premise of translation activities.Translators should trust that the original text has translation value.The second motion is aggression:’break’a code,leaving the shell smashed,and the vital layers stripped.The third motion is incorporation.Steiner believes that the effect of incorporation will be affected by the target language.Therefore,the translator either abides by the target language structure or breaks the target language structure.However,whatever the degree of’naturalization,’the act of importation can potentially dislocate or relocate the whole of the native structure.Because the first three steps cause an imbalance between the original text and the target text,the translator must adopt different translation methods to restore the balance.Thus,the last motion is compensation.Completing the translation practice under the guidance of the fourfold hermeneutic motion,the author found out that a translator should obtain literary accomplishment and linguistic ability in literary translation and exert subjective initiative to excavate the original text.
