The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle believed that tragedy could purify emotions by inspiring pity and fear.In order to achieve the best results,he proposed the imitation theory, plot theory, character theory and tragic flaws theory. In the plot, the transformation of the characters’ fete is achieved by creating reversals and discoveries. In the characterization, good people suffer undeserved misfortune due to their flaws. The tragedy of The Pearl has many fits with Aristotle’s tragedy theory, and this paper used this tragedy theory as a guide to analyzing the tragedy of Kino in The Pearl.Firstly,it pointed out that The Pearl has six elements of tragedy and is a tragedy. Then it discussed how the novella arouses the reader’s pity and fear from the plot of the conflict between Kino’s dream and society, family and personal ability, and Kino’s personality defects.Through the ending of Kino returned the pearl into the sea,it pointed out that the novella has the effect of purifying emotions. It allowed readers to turn pity into reverence, find a balance between pity and reverence, and improve their psychological control. The above analysis concludes:The Pearl is a successful tragic novella that can purify destructive emotions.Reading tragic works that conform to Aristotle’s tragic view can help people improve their psychological regulation ability to a certain extent, build healthy psychology, and better face the pressure of life.
