Based on the theoretical framework of Fairclough’s three-dimensional discourse analysis model, using Halliday’s systemic functional grammar and van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis as analysis tools,in combination with AntConc 3.5.9 corpus search and analysis software, this study analyzed the U.S.mainstream media,The New York Times and The Washington Post’s reports on Sino-US trade friction in the fields of technology, agriculture and pharmaceuticals qualitatively and quantitatively. From three aspects of text, discourse practice and social practice, this study comprehensively analyzed the linguistic characteristics of the news reports in the fields of technology, agriculture and pharmaceuticals of Sino-US trade friction, their differences and the reasons for these differences. The study found that the U.S.mainstream media’s reports on Sino-US trade friction in the technology field were mainly to suppress China’s technological development;in the agriculture field,China was required to buy more agricultural products from the United States;in the pharmaceutical field, the U.S.imported APIs from China, and China imported some special drugs for cancer treatment from the United States, which was mutually beneficial. The fundamental reason for the differentiation of these reports was national interest.Reports in these different fields permeated the views, political standpoints, and ideologies of the U.S.mainstream media. The reporter adopted the strategy of discourse manipulation, completed the discourse expression and meaning construction of the differentiation through text, discourse practice and social practice, and subtly conveyed his own views, values and ideology to readers.
