A Report On The C-E Translation Of A Lonely New Year’s Eve(Excerpts)from The Hermeneutics Perspective

A Lonely New Year ’s Eve is one of the most influential novels of Tian Er and has been awarded the Fourth Lu Xun Literary Prize.The novel,by depicting the hardships of the underclass,reflects the loneliness of people and their desire for warmth,and contributes to its value in translation.This report,taking the English translation of the end of the novel as the case,discusses the common problems and solutions in the translation of the novel guided by George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion—"trust","aggression","incorporation" and "compensation".First of all,to "trust" the value of the source text and the meaning of the translation practice is the basis for the development of this practice.Secondly,in the process of "aggression",the translator understands the expressions unique in Chinese culture in the source text fully.Next,in the process of "incorporation",the translator "incorporates" the original expressions in terms of both form and meaning,and considers the translation from the perspective of the target language reader.Lastly,in the final process of "compensation",the translator makes up for the missing information in the translation to a certain extent through a combination of explicit and implicit compensation.The report uses the Hermeneutic Motion to guide the translation practice,aiming at solving specific problems such as the translation barriers caused by language and culture differences and the difficulty to achieve a high degree of conformity with the source text style etc.It is hoped that the relevant research and analysis can summarize the common problems of novel translation and find out corresponding countermeasures so as to provide new inspiration for later translation practice.
