A Report On The Translation Of Women In The Medieval Common Law (Excerpt From Chapter Ⅵ)

The book Women in the Medieval Common Law mainly introduces the legal status and unfair treatment of British women in medieval common law.The source text of this translation practice report is selected from the sixth chapter of the book,which introduces the situation of female defendants in the middle ages,the unfair treatment and punishment they suffered at that time.The original text is concise in language and clear in logic.Choosing this text as translation material will help the readers have a clearer understanding of the changes of women’s legal status.At the same time,studying the legal status of women in the West is also conducive to deepening the readers’overall understanding of the protection of women’s rights and interests,which has strong practical significance for translation.This report consists of four main parts.The first is the description of the translation task,which includes the source of the material,the introduction of the author and the book and the significance of the selected material.The second is the description of the translation process,which describes the whole process of this translation practice from preparation to finalization.The third is the key content of this report,the analysis of the translation cases.It mainly analyzes the translation cases from three levels:vocabulary,syntax and discourse.The vocabulary level mainly includes words with special legal meaning,foreign words and specialized terms.At the syntactic level,four types of sentences are analyzed:attributive clause,adverbial clause,passive clause and long and difficult sentence.On the discourse level,the analysis focused on the reference and ellipsis.The fourth is the summary of translation practice,which summarizes the author’s experience in this translation practice.In the process of translation,the author adopts the theory of functional equivalence as the guide,adopts literal and liberal translation methods,consults the materials and legal dictionaries,and tries to make the translation as accurate as possible.
