| Over the past three decades,China has undergone massive urbanization transformation and rapid urban expansion, and tremendous spatial changes have taken place across the country.Among them, the construction of new towns represented by university towns has developed very rapidly and has become one of the main driving forces for the rapid urban expansion. The proliferation of university towns is the result of China’s higher education reform and government push.On the one hand, the construction of the university town has indeed promoted the growth of urbanization, driven the development of urban space, and stimulated the urbanization of suburbs. On the other hand, the university towns built on the urban fringe suburbs and original agricultural land have gradually exposed their internal living facilities and supporting services in the process of development. At the same time, there are problems of geographical space, behavioral space and social space isolation from the outside world. Therefore, this paper defines the isolation of university towns from the outside world as "islandization" from three aspects: geospatial, behavioral and psychological.Taking Jinan Changqing University Town as a case area,it mainly uses the methods of questionnaire survey and interview to analyze the characteristics of the daily behavior patterns of students and teachers in the university town, and further studies the influence of the university through the constructed analytical framework of geospatial, behavior and psychology. And further study the influencing factors and formation mechanism of the islandization of university towns. Finally, the countermeasures and suggestions are put forward to break the vicious circle of isolation and realize the sustainable and benign development of the university town. The research on the characteristics of people’s daily behavior patterns in university towns found that students’ daily behavioral characteristics are limited in the interior of the university towns, and rarely have behavioral connections with the center of Changqing District. This behavioral agglomeration is not entirely voluntary by students, but is forced by the limitations of long physical distance and geographic space isolation. However, the living needs of students are not fully met in the university town, and sometimes they will go to Jinan city center to carry out related activities by breaking through the space distance restrictions. When going out,it will be accompanied by multiple transfers and time-consuming travel behaviors, which will trigger students’ psychological recognition of the social isolation of university towns. In terms of teacher behavior, due to the low occupancy rate in university towns, the separation of work-housing spaces leads to high-frequency and time-consuming commuting behaviors. In addition, teachers’ shopping, entertainment, and leisure behaviors have spatial characteristics that are close to residential areas. However, teachers living in the university town often go to the central area of Jinan for activities in pursuit of high-quality shopping, entertainment, medical treatment and leisure experience due to their low satisfaction with the facilities and services of the university town, but rarely choose the center of Changqing District.Similarly, when going out, teachers need to transfer multiple times when choosing public transportation, and choosing private cars to travel will also cost a lot of time and energy due to traffic congestion. This makes teachers think that the university town is inconvenient to communicate with the outside world, and it is obviously separated from the space and society in the central area, which arouses the emotional resonance of the islandization of the university town. The study on the influencing factors and formation mechanism of the islandization of university towns found that geospatial factors are the fundamental factors causing the islandization of university towns, and the behavioral and psychological factors caused by geographic space are important factors leading to the islandization of university towns. The three factors of geographic space, behavior and psychology interact and reinforce each other, triggering and deepening the islandization effect of the university town.In the end, three independent and parallel triple spaces of the University Town, the center of Changqing District and the central area of Jinan were formed, making the University Town appear as an isolated island. |
