Abstract/Summary:
With the development of digitalization and the advancement of scientific and technological means, multimodal communication has become the norm in people’s daily life.Among them, documentaries win the favor of more and more viewers with their objective and vivid narration.Nowadays, our country’s remarkable achievements in fighting against COVID-19 have attracted worldwide attention in the context of epidemic.During this process,“family and country sentiment”,a hot word occupying major media headlines,is a strong spiritual support for our country’s fight against the epidemic. And considerable documentaries on anti-epidemic themes are the most concentrated interpretation of it.At present, most of the research on “family and country sentiment” in academia remains on its connotation and essence. However, there is little in-depth research on the construction process of it in discourse, especially in dynamic discourse such as documentaries.Together Against COVID-19 is a six-episode large-scale documentary jointly produced by the Central Propaganda Department and China Central Radio and Television Station, which records the whole process of our country’s epidemic prevention and control in a panoramic manner with massive materials. This thesis intends to conduct a multimodal discourse analysis on the construction of “family and country sentiment” in this documentary, and employs ELAN5.9 to carry out the quantitative study on the semiotic resources like language, scenes and music etc.Meanwhile, the qualitative study of representative examples selected from the documentary is conducted. The following questions will be discussed:(1)What are multimodal semiotic features in the construction of “family and country sentiment” in Together Against COVID-19?(2)How do different modes coordinate to construct “family and country sentiment”?(3)What is the effect of these synergistic relations on the construction process? The results show that in terms of the use of semiotic resources, this documentary mainly takes narrations and scenes as the dominant semiotic resources, accounting for 42.81% and 38.9% of the total annotation duration respectively. While the image and font semiotic types are the least frequently used, occupying only 5.04% and 3.25% respectively. In terms of multimodal synergistic relationships, the complementary relationship of reinforcement often occurs in situations where“family and country sentiment” is constructed at the individual or country level respectively. For example, the verbal mode expresses praise for the spirit of the people to overcome the difficulties together, and the visual mode presents the working scenes of front-line anti-epidemic personnel etc. This type plays a positive role in the construction of “family and country sentiment”,and is conducive to the formation of gratitude and admiration of the viewers.Besides, the type of nonreinforcement often appears in the process of interactive expression of country and individual levels, such as the synergy of narrations describing national policies and scenes showing individual actions.Compared with the type of reinforcement, this type connects the country and the individual more closely so that it is conducive to forming the firm belief. Finally, the non-complementary relationships often appear in the synergy of music and scenes,or the synergy of the narrations describing the temporal victory and the scenes showing the spring scenery in Wuhan. At this time, the verbal mode and the visual mode form a context interaction, and the latter plays the role of rendering emotions and subtly enhances the expression effect of “family and country sentiment”.All in all, considerable anti-epidemic documentaries have led us to review the process of our country’s temporary victory in the fight against COVID-19.The “family and country sentiment”conveyed in these documentaries is worthy of our deep understanding.Theoretically, this thesis not only broadens the research field of multimodal discourse analysis but also provides new research perspectives for “family and country sentiment” with Chinese characteristics.Practically, this thesis prompts people to strengthen their beliefs and unite to form a stronger force.
