The figure painting of Chen Hongshou,a painter in the Ming Dynasty, has become a peak in the history of traditional figure painting with its unique image portrait characteristics.Since the historical record of Chinese figure painting, there has been a lot of theoretical research on the"form" of objects.Gu Kaizhi’s proposal of"writing gods with shapes" and Sheikh’s "lived charm" all require the display of the spiritual temperament of the characters while creating images. Before Chen Hongshou, most of the portraits took the "images of the world",and Chen Hongshou boldly deformed on the basis of the character image, took the "meaning" of objects, and integrated his unique personal style and creation methods to show the figure painting style to the world with a new look.It can be seen that Chen Hongshou’s figure painting modeling, based on the basic characteristics of objects, coupled with his unique aesthetic and creative thinking, has formed a brand-new character picture appearance. The album of Sixteen Views of Reclusion was written in 1651.It is a work of Chen Hongshou the year before his death. The album is in paper, with a total of twenty pages. The first four pages are self-titled bibliography and inscriptions. The last sixteen pages depict sixteen kinds of seclusion life with the help of the Buddhist "Sixteen Views".The character identity covers literati, immortals and ladies. This article will take this work as the main line, take the theoretical background of the "image" portrait of literati in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and combine Chen Hongshou’s life experience, creative practice and aesthetic interests to study the "image" portrait characteristics of various characters in the album of "Sixteen Views of Recluse".
