This paper studies the collection of works Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres(《文体明辨》)compiled by Xu Shizeng in the Ming Dynasty.The aim of this research is to discuss the historical background and evolution of Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres;as the master of "Theory of Literary Genres"in ancient China,what does it differentiate,how to differentiate,why does it differentiate like this,and what are its gains and losses;in addition to the well-known stylistic theory,whether it possesses other contents and values should be considered;which kind of traditional Chinese literature can be represented by the above jointly characteristics.At present,the existing researches have the common limitations.Namely,they focus particularly on the "Expository Preface" rather than "Selected Text".Moreover,they focus only on horizontal stylistic theory of "Genres Differentiation" of "Expository Preface",while ignoring the vertical criticism of "Critical Diferentiation"(differentiate pin lei,辨品类).Therefore,if the overall perspective of Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres is not understood clearly,the above questions would not reasonably answered.Here,this study restores the external generation background and internal text characteristics by perusing the "Expository Preface" of Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres,"Selected Text"and literatures,so as to grasp its position and meaning in the evolution of Chinese literature from the origin as a whole.In terms of the structure,this paper is divided into two parts.Part I is composed of Introduction,Text and Conclusions.Part Ⅱ is the annotation of the "Expository Preface" of Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres.In Part Ⅰ,the gains and losses of researches on Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres are elaborated and rethought in the Introduction,thus establishing the perspective,method and problem orientation of our paper.In the first chapter,the generation of Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres is investigated from the perspectives of short period of time and "Long Duration",the former discusses the general environment of article acquisition under the system of Shujishi in Ming Dynasty,while the latter reveals the paradigm of compilation of anthology reestablishedin Authentic Origin of Literary Writing《文章正宗》).In the second chapter,the main connotation and internal logic of Stylistic Theory of Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres are systematically analyzed from three dimensions of concept,style and theory.In the third chapter,the unique significances of "Poetry Criticism" and "Article Criticism" are found according to the "Expository Preface"discussion and "Selected Text" style.Finally,in the Conclusions,the Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres is overall summarized based on the above research.It is certain that the authoring system of Chinese literature with direct variation and genres differentiation is established by coordination between "Expository Preface"and "Selected Text" as well as complementation between "Genres Differentiation" and"Critical Differentiation".In Part II,the first is to annotate one hundred and twenty-one"Expository Prefaces" of Stylistic and Critical Differentiation of Literary Genres,aiming to understand the meaning of words and sentences as well as know the source of historical materials.Secondly,the "Expository Preface" is annotated through a comprehensive study,mainly referring to Authentic Origin ofLiterary Writing of Zhen Dexiu and Stylistic Investigation into Literary Writings(《文章辨体》)of Wu Ne,in order to explain the reasons for reviewing the "Expository Preface" as well as gain and loss of traditional change.
