Since independence in 1964,the separation in the western region of Zambia has plagued nation-state building and ethnic unity in Zambia. In the mid-18 th century, the Lozi people formed their own language and traditional culture in the process of migration and resistance to foreign invasions, and the independent history of the Lozi Kingdom became the common memory of generations of Lozi people and the source of historical legitimacy of the separation. In the 1790 s,the Kingdom of Lozi began to lose its independent status in the process of interacting with the colonizers, and the early struggle of the traditional Elite of Lozi for independence and the maintenance of its authority was the prototype of the separatist movement. After Zambia’s independence, the traditional Lozi elite reached a brief “peace”with the central government, but as Zambia’s economic growth slowed and affected the livelihoods of The Lozi people, and the central government introduced political reform measures to weaken local power,a separation led by the Lozi elite began to emerge in the western region. The separatists worked to win the support of domestic and foreign public opinion for the separation, seized local power and promoted secession through the form of a party parliamentary struggle, and after the failure of the strategy of seizing power, turned to inciting social unrest.Zambia’s central government immediately proposed economic, legal and political measures to suppress the separation.During the Second Republic period,Zambia’s economy deteriorated further, the Lozi people in the western region were living in a worse condition than they had been during the colonial period, and the one-party system suppressed the separatist movement, but also led to the ordinary people of Lozi beginning to resent the central government.During the Third Republic, due to the implementation of the multi-party system, the resentment accumulated by the Lozi people during the Second Republic erupted in a concentrated way, prompting a large-scale separatist movement to begin to appear in the western region. However, due to the improvement of Zambia’s economic situation, the central government’s rational response has successfully defused the challenge of the separatist movement. The history of the separation in the western region of Zambia from its rise to its trough to its climax shows that the emergence of separatist movements is closely related to ethnic identity, economic recession or imbalance in economic development, and the political marginalization of minority groups. In terms of dealing with the separation, the combination of multiple coping methods can effectively calm the separation.
