The "three rites" have always been the ideological basis for the construction of the Chinese ritual system and the bonding of all social classes, forming our unique ritual thought and culture. In the late Qing Dynasty,in the face of the old feudal system on the verge of collapse and the full-scale invasion of modern industrial society to replace the original social structure of the new situation, the traditional rites and rituals that support the spirit of the Chinese people also with the academic turn of scripture and rituals researchers to explore the interpretation and possibilities of the new era.In this particular period of transition,Yu Yue,as a great scholar of scripture and ritual in the late Qing dynasty, naturally his academic tendencies and achievements with obvious characteristics of the times. This paper focuses on the characteristics of Yu Yue’s ritual studies, which can be analyzed from two perspectives:first, from the methodological level of Yu Yue’s treatment of ritual literature, and second, from the metaphysical level of Yu Yue’s thinking about ritual and music systems.Based on this framework, the text is divided into four chapters. The first introductory chapter briefly introduces Yu Yue’s life, the environment of his time and the academic climate of his time,as well as the resulting tendencies of Yu Yue’s own scholarship, and then elaborates on the origins and significance of the topic, the current state of research, research ideas, and theory, and prepares the ground for the subsequent analysis of the characteristics of Yu Yue’s ritual studies. The second chapter uses the Chun Zaitang Quanshu as the basis for the study, classifies and sorts out Yu Yue’s ritual-related works, and provides a more detailed introduction to several important monographs on the "three rites".Chapter 3 summarizes the methodological features of Yu Yue’s ritual studies, including his different emphasis on the "three rites",following the spirit of Chinese studies, but also reconciling Han and Song, and not adhering to family law,in addition to a separate example of Yu Yue’s obedience to Zheng’s rituals and the characteristics of all schools of thought.Chapter 4 introduces the characteristics of Yu Yue’s ritualistic thinking.Divided into the ritual system, the understanding of ritual law,the future development of attitudes and other perspectives to examine how Yu Yue in those turbulent times is the value of traditional ritual law, looking for what path to seek the correct guidance of traditional ritual law for the real world. It reflects the contradictory characteristics of Yu Yue’s ritualistic thinking, which was both adaptable and conservative.By exploring the two major dimensions of Yu Yue’s ritual research methodology and ritual thought,it is possible not only to understand the traditional Chinese school of scribes represented by Yu Yue,the characteristics of scripture, but also, and more importantly,to glimpse a large group of academic conservatives living in the late Qing Dynasty, who recognized that the old ritual system had lost its role in sustaining people in the new environment. On the one hand, they realized that only by changing the old methods of academic research and traditional thinking about the ritual and music system could they adapt to the requirements of the new era,but on the other hand, they were so conservative that they were unable to completely revolutionize traditional scholarship.Unable to learn new ideas from the West, they instead turned to the Song school of traditional Chinese academic system to seek a way out, restoring the more ancient ritual system as a way out, resulting in their being caught in the old circle and left behind in the tide of the transition period between old and new academics. This is a profound illustration of the contradictory thoughts of the traditional scholars who were held hostage by the times and who,in the face of the unprecedented changes of the millennium, were besieged by the intertwining of change and old-fashionedness,and it is an inspiration for the times and culture.
