Both the public and researchers agree that wisdom develops from challenging life events.Emotional experiences triggered by challenging life events play an important role in the process of wise reasoning.Previous studies have shown that emotional stability contributes to wise reasoning, and cognitive reappraisal is closely related to wise reasoning. However, the role of emotional stability and cognitive reappraisal on wise reasoning remains unclear. The present study examined the effects of emotional stability and cognitive reappraisal on wise reasoning using questionnaires, experiments and interviews.Study 1 explored the predictive effect of individual’s emotional stability on wise reasoning in different conflict situations.Emotional stability and self-assessment of wise reasoning in different conflict situations were measured by questionnaire. In addition, raters rate the content of wise reasoning according to the criteria of wise reasoning. The results showed that emotional stability significantly negatively predicted individual’s wise reasoning scores(including self-rating and other rating)under different situations, namely, the more stable the emotion, the wiser the reasoning.Study 2 explored the positive effect of cognitive reappraisal on wise reasoning. In the experimental, the independent variables were with/without cognitive reappraisal, and the dependent variables were wise reasoning(including self-rating and other-rating).In this study, participants with typical emotional instability were implicitly primed with cognitive reappraisal or neutral task through sentence unscrambling task, and then completed the wise reasoning task. The results showed that cognitive reappraisal was effective, and the wise reasoning scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group.Study 3 explored the psychological process and influencing factors of emotional instability individuals’ cognitive reappraisal and wise reasoning of their personally experienced events. The process and influencing factors of “emotional instability–cognitive reappraisal–wise reasoning after reappraisal” were summarized and analyzed by interviewing individuals with typically emotional instability. The results showed that cognitive reappraisal helps improve emotional stability, which in turn improves wise reasoning.Social support is an important factor influencing emotional stability, cognitive reappraisal and wise reasoning. The results of all three sub-studies suggested that emotional stability and cognitive reappraisal contribute to better wise reasoning. This study demonstrated the effect of emotional stability on wise reasoning, found the effectiveness of cognitive reappraisal intervention before wise reasoning, explored the process of emotional change before wise reasoning by interviewing. The results showed that wise reasoning has positive plasticity, which brings light for human beings to seek continuous optimization of life and culture. The outstanding contribution of this study is to refine the research on the relationship between emotional stability, cognitive reappraisal and wise reasoning, providing a new perspective and new evidence for the development and education of wise reasoning. |
