Due to limited land availability in urban land planning, the development and utilization of underground spaces are often increased to enhance spatial utilization.During the simultaneous construction of multiple projects, various issues arise that prevent the merging of adjacent excavations. As a result, the support of the middle soil mass in adjacent excavations becomes a concern.Horizontal tensioned anchor cables are a cost-effective method to address the support of the middle soil mass in adjacent excavations. To investigate the effectiveness of tensioned anchor cables in supporting the middle soil mass in adjacent excavations, this study utilizes the MIDAS GTS NX software to establish a finite element analysis model. The study examines the effects of different numbers of tensioned anchor cables, varying pre-stress levels, different spacing between adjacent excavations, and different depth differences between adjacent excavations on the support structure. Finally, the conclusions are validated through practical engineering projects. The study concludes that tensioned anchor cables provide effective support to the middle soil mass in adjacent excavations and their effectiveness is influenced by factors such as the number of cables,pre-stress levels, spacing between excavations, and depth differences. These findings contribute to the understanding and application of tensioned anchor cables in supporting adjacent excavations:(1)The Influence of Different Numbers of Tensioned Anchor Cables: In the absence of tensioned anchor cables, the supporting piles on both sides tilt towards the excavation side. However, when tensioned anchor cables are present, the supporting piles of adjacent excavations converge towards the middle soil mass. The presence of tensioned anchor cables affects the deformation direction of the middle soil mass in adjacent excavations and significantly enhances the overall integrity of the middle soil mass.(2)The Influence of Different Pre-stresses of Tensioned Anchor Cables: With an increase in the pre-stress of the tensioned anchor cables, the displacement of the pile top of the supporting piles towards the middle soil mass in the adjacent excavations also increases. Moreover, the magnitude of the internal forces experienced by the tensioned anchor cables is positively correlated with the applied pre-stress.(3)The Influence of Different Spacings between Adjacent Excavations: The displacement of the pile top of the supporting piles towards the middle soil mass in the adjacent excavations increases with an increase in the spacing between adjacent excavations. The bending moment of the supporting piles also increases with the increase in spacing between adjacent excavations,as the increased spacing results in higher soil pressure on the middle soil mass.(4)The Influence of Depth Difference between Adjacent Excavations: With an increase in the depth difference between adjacent excavations, the overall displacement of the upper part of the middle soil mass towards the deeper excavation side increases. The depth difference between adjacent excavations is positively correlated with the maximum bending moment on the pile body of the supporting piles. The presence of depth difference leads to an imbalance in the forces on the supporting piles on both sides, with most of the lateral pressure from the middle soil mass being exerted on the supporting piles of the deeper excavation. However, the addition of tensioned anchor cables significantly reduces the risk of such tilting.
