Chu Opera is one of the major local operas in Hubei Province and one of the national intangible cultural heritages.With a history of over 170 years,Chu Opera has been developed through the extraordinary efforts of generations of performers.He is the first actor in the history of Chu Opera to win the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award,a national-level actor,a representative inheritor of the intangible culture of Chu Opera,and an expert receiving a special allowance from the State Council.He is currently the vice-chairman of the Hubei Provincial Theatre Association and vice-president of the Hubei Opera Art Theatre.In the past 40 years,he has portrayed many lifelike images on stage,and has become a representative artist of the junior student of Chu Opera,who is well versed in both literature and martial arts,and has made important contributions to the inheritance,development and innovation of the art of Chu Opera.His unique style of singing and acting has been highly praised by theatre fans and experts alike.This article will provide a comprehensive study and discussion of Zhan Chunyao through four perspectives: his artistic path,an exploration of the characteristics of his singing voice,an exploration of his operatic characterisation and his contribution to Chu Opera.The whole paper is based on a combination of interviews,literature review and fieldwork.The first chapter is about Zhan Chunyao’s artistic journey,starting with his cultural background and his connection with Chu opera,followed by the important turning point in his life when he worked hard to enter the opera school,joined the Chu opera troupe and finally won the Meihua Award after years of professional training.The second chapter explores his singing style in detail from three perspectives:his heritage of the "Li School",his study of Beijing opera and other types of opera,and his incorporation of the best of the best and the best of the best,which led him to develop a unique style of singing.The third chapter is an exploration of Zhan Chunyao’s operatic characterisation,from both the "internal and external" aspects: the "visualisation" of his inner experience,and the "individualisation" of his external programme,combined with his The fourth chapter is a discussion of Zhan Chunyao’s work on the characterisation of Chu.Chapter 4 deals with the influence of Zhan Chunyao on Chu Opera and his contribution to its transmission and development.It is the author’s hope that this study will provide a better understanding of the artistic achievements of Zhan Chunyao,the national intangible cultural heritage of Chu Opera,and provide a valuable reference for the study of the performing arts of Chu Opera,as well as contribute to the heritage and development of Chu Opera and the training of operatic performing arts talents.
