The source text of the translation practice report is The Diamond Eye,written by an American writer Kate Quinn. The Diamond Eye is a story about Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko(Mila). With her talent and hard training, she has made 309 kills in the Soviet and German War and is awarded the titles of Sniper Queen and Lady Death. The translator translates the first five chapters and completes this report based on practical situations. The selected original text for translation practice is about 15000 words, aiming to explore some translation methods applicable to historical novels. This report shows the translation difficulties at the lexical level, syntactic level and rhetoric device in the process of translation and reasonable translation methods in response to difficulties mentioned above. The lexical difficulties consist of common words, polysemy and culture-loaded words;the syntactic difficulties are fragments and long sentences.Another difficulty in rhetoric device is that sentences with rhetoric device are not suitable to be translated freely. Then, the translator focuses on the translation methods to address difficulties at the lexical level, syntactic level and rhetoric device. At the lexical level, the translator adopts translation methods of the choice of meaning, semantic extension,four-character phrases and annotation. At the syntactic level, the translator adopts translation methods of amplification, following original order and reinventing sentence structure. In the rhetoric device, the translator adopts free translation. After completing this translation practice, the translator learns to use various translation methods and selects translation methods reasonably based on the difficulties at the lexical level, syntactic level and rhetoric device, which makes the translation be more consistent with the common expression of Chinese and making it easier for readers to understand the content of the original text. This report provides reference and guidance for the translation of historical novels, and also helps to stimulate readers’ interest in text content and translation methods.
