A Study Of Khitan Names In Khitan Inscriptions

So far,among the published Khitan literature,the academic circle has interpreted about 400 small characters of Khitan names appeared in Khitan small script inscriptions and about 100 in Khitan large script inscriptions,many of which are still uninterpreted.This paper has carried out a systematic study and solved relevant problems on the basis of previous studies,focusing on the phenomenon of one person and multiple names of the Khitan people and phenomenon of connecting names or same name among relatives,taking the Khitan names or the same name among relatives,taking the Khitan names in the Khitan literature as the research objects,conbining the relevant in the History of Liao Dynasty,in the History of Jin Dynasty,the Records of the Khitan Kingdom and the Chinese inscriptions of the same period,using the methods of comparative philology and historical comparative linguistics.At the same time,it has systematically analyzed the names of the Khitan people from the perspective of meaning and etymology,and further explored the naming cultrure,naming habits and cognitive psychology of the Khitan people.In terms of the phenomenon of one person and more than one name of the Khitan people,the auther found that Yelü Zhixian and Xiao Chala both had five names.In addition,the author also found that the Khitan people also had the custom of changing names.In terms of the Khitan people’s joint name phenomenon,through sorting out the family relationship,we found a new joint name relationship,namely uncle and nephew joint name.In addition,we also found a case of brother joint name and three cases of sister joint name,such as brother of Han Dilie(?)1-búl-uh-(?) and the second son of Han Dilie(?)1-búl-uh,brother of Yelü Zhixian(?)t-abu-y-én and son of the Yelü Zhixian(?)t-abu-y-er.In addition,this paper further proves the phenomenon of brothers and sisters jointing names.In terms of phenomenon of namesake,the auther has investigated four new namesake phenomenon nephew namesake,such as seconde dougther of Lüfen and the second son of are(?)ia-277,uncle nephew namesake such as the name of the brother of Xiao Zhonggong and the two dougther of Xiao Zhonggong are(?)ia-277,sister namesake such as the name of the both dougther of Xiao Zhonggong are(?)ia-277,uncle nephew namesake such as the name of the younger brother of the Chao Yin and the dougther of the Chao Yin are(?)or-l-b-(?).In terms of meaning and etymology,the Khitan names are rich and various in meaning and etymology.In addition,we found that the glyph(?)én name suffix for man and the glyph(?)én2 name suffix for women when they appear in suffixes of words with the same roots in the same document.In this paper,the names of the unearthed Khitan literature have been systematically sorted out and summarized,and attached to the end of the text.
